Plus-size shopping tips? [Jul. 9th, 2011|11:21 pm]

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for a plus-sized lady looking for a stylish, affordable wedding dress? We're getting ready for my sister's wedding, and she's having trouble finding something she loves. Thanks!

wedding co-op in DC? [Sep. 23rd, 2010|10:15 pm]

I live in DC and recently read the Offbeat Bride. I am interested in joining or starting up a wedding co-op to save money on rentals. I'm planning a destination wedding in Wisconsin next summer (July 30, 2011). If you are a bride- or groom-to-be involved in a DC co-op or interested to start one, please contact me.

Nature vs. Nuture... the perfect wedding spot? [Jul. 28th, 2010|11:49 pm]

Hi everyone!

I'm really needing help finding a wedding venue around the NOVA area...  problem is, I live in Boulder, CO so it is proving to be a difficult endeavor!  First let me tell you a little about my fiance and I and what we are looking for.  We're outdoorsy, earthy, eco-conscious (hence Boulder, CO) folk who are also fairly traditional when it comes to family and culture (1/2 of my fam is from Peru, the other is from Manassas, VA ...quite a combo!).  We're looking for a place that is unique, natural, and down to earth...  problem is, I am mainly finding mansions and plantations, and I am no southern belle

We did find a place called Montfair Resort Farm (http://www.montfairresortfarm.com/main.php) which we visited while we were last in the area.  It is beautiful and totally what we are into.  However, our families aren't as adventurous or young as we are, and this place is a little too rugged for our aging family members.  When Ruby, the sweet groundskeeper at Montfair, mentioned the bear that likes to occasionally wander around the property my mom looked at me with these huge eyes that said "oh, please no!"  --and she's the country girl from manassas!

The predicament is finding a balance between making ourselves happy and making sure our guests are comfortable (AC for older guests).  So our ideal spot would be a natural setting that isn't too rugged, is less than 2 hours from DC, and would keep our total cost under $12,000.  So, I ask you, my wedding planning comrades, does such a place exist?

Thanks in advance : )

Plus sized wedding dresses? [Feb. 7th, 2010|04:31 pm]

lyricon
Hello everyone,

I'm getting married in September and starting the hunt for a wedding dress. I wear an 18 in street clothes, and a quick trip to David's Bridal put me in a 20W in most of their wedding gowns. My mom's coming to visit, though, and I'd like to consider some local shops in addition to David's Bridal. Does anyone know of a place that has a reasonable selection of plus-sized dresses?

And I'm afraid, of course, that price cannot be ignored. I'm planning to spend somewhere between $500-$1500 on a dress. Is David's Bridal my only chance? Please help me find a local store to support, and thanks!

Locations? [Jan. 12th, 2009|01:54 pm]

Help! I'm experiencing some pretty serious site rental and catering sticker shock, and I'm hoping you guys have some more ideas. For my first wedding, we rented a shelter house at a local park for $100, and had the reception at an arts center for something like $2000, including site rental and catering.

From what I've seen thus far, such things don't seem to exist in this area. I guess it makes sense - DC is such a historic area that anything quirky and historic is well aware of how valuable it is and happy to charge accordingly. ;-)

Now, I will say that we're looking to do something a bit more elegant than a cement-floored shelter house this time around, but we're still hoping to find a way to do it relatively inexpensively. What am I missing? What awesome sites have you folks found? Parks? Historic houses? I've looked into PG and Montgomery County parks, but haven't found anything that really fits the bill. Where else could I look? Are there any websites that have collected links of rental possibilities?

We're looking mostly at Maryland, within an hour or so of DC, but are open to other ideas.

Sites currently under consideration:

Savage Mill Manor House

The Lodge at Little Seneca Creek

94th Aerosquadron Restaurant (You can't tell from their website, but it's actually designed to look like a French country house, exposed beams, antiques, etc.)

And in the "awesome but far away and/or expensive" category: The Castle B&B and Chase Court

Caterers? [Jan. 5th, 2009|11:01 am]

Hello all! My beloved and I got engaged on Christmas, and so now of course I'm deep in the throes of ZOMGWEDDINGPLANNINGEEEEEE! This is the second time around for both of us, and we'll be paying for everything ourselves, and we're looking to do something both unique and somewhat low-key. The theme, such as it is, is "whimsy" - he proposed using a trail of Swedish Fish to lead me back to a proxy ring (since we wanted to choose the real ring together), and we'll be trying to keep that sense of light-hearted fun in the wedding ceremony and reception. Most of it will be very DIY - I'll be making my dress and most of the paper things and decorations. I'm also hoping to get him into a tuxedo Utilikilt. :-D

We've got several locations we're pondering, but we're really still in the very first stages of tossing around ideas. One of my big questions involves caterers - I have NO idea how much we might expect to pay, which companies are great or awful, any of that jazz. One place we're looking at lists various menus ranging from about $40/person to almost $90/person - is that typical? So that's where you fine folks come in - I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some direction, pointers, advice, recommendations, whatever.

Some of the venues we're considering require the use of specific caterers, of course, so there's that. Also, to give you an idea of scope, the guest list will be between 50-100 people (depending on cousins - LOL!), and since about 80% will be coming from out of town, we do want to feed them a fairly substantial meal, not just hors d'oeuvres.

Feel free to toss any other DC-area wedding-related advice my way, too! Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi there everyone!

It's less than two weeks until my wedding. Sorry I've been out of touch, but it's been very busy out here in California.

Here are a couple of pictures of our location, Hakone Gardens:

Thirsty [May. 30th, 2008|01:47 pm]

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question about wedding drinks - I was planning on making iced tea and lemonade myself to serve at my June wedding, and we'll obviously also have water. I want to avoid water bottles for environmental reasons, so I'm wondering if any of you have solutions to this quandry. Is there anywhere to rent a water cooler/dispenser? I just use a Brita at home so I don't want to buy a cooler just for the big day. I was thinking of using one of those gatorade-like jugs with ice and water, but if you have a classier idea I'd  love to hear it.

Thanks so much. I'm sure I'll write more frantic posts as the day looms near.

Hi!  I'm writing an article for the Takoma Voice, a monthly news paper in Takoma Park, MD on alternative wedding ideas and I'd love to interview people in the DC and Maryland area.

Unfortunately, I'm running short of time (deadline for June issue is this Thursday May 29, 2008- Yikes!), so if you have a great Off Beat wedding story or know a  local Off Beat Bride, or have ideas about local venues, stores, caterers, dress makers, etc who cater to the Off Beat
Bride, etc, etc, PLEASE email me directly at bethany925@starpower.net

Thanks so much!

Argh to the traditional! [Mar. 3rd, 2008|07:38 pm]

I am so sick of sparkles! Lace! All such nonsense. I'm getting married in four months in Puerto Vallarta and still have some things to check off my to do list. Like getting cool presents for my best friends serving as my maid of honors. And registering. And silk screening images onto t-shirts for our wedding favors. Any suggestions? Any cool places to get wedding party gifts? Funky bracelets you can get engraved or something really unique. Any fun ideas on registering? Thanks!
